Every matter, organic or inorganic, is subjected to inevitable decay. Sometimes, the decay is just a result of the usage and of the passing time, while in other instances it is brought forward and it is caused voluntarily. It could also be taken as the consequence of the action of an external factor, i.e. a virus or an extreme weather phenomenon. Finally, it could simply be the natural result of idleness. Its tenses are simultaneously the imperfect, the present, and the future progressive. Sanatorio Project constitutes an artistic project that deals with decay in all the above tenses. It took place in an old sanatorium, which was established by doctor Georgios Karamanis in the city of Chania, Pilio, in the beginning of the 20th century. There, patients suffering from “Koch bacillus” sought for deceleration of the symptoms of a chronic infectuous disease, i.e. tuberculosis or “consumption” as it was known, due to the slow and consistent calamity that causes to the organism. The building itself, as a modern ruin, demonstrates in the best way the effect of decay due to its perennial abandonment. A number of artists, in the short time limit of one day, were called to interfere in it ephemerally, to attribute new meanings to its extended deconstruction by highlighting it or by using it as a creative beginning. At the same time others, driven by its present condition, turned to the usage of the practices of an “archaeology of today”, a symbolic reconstruction or a speeding up of its destruction or even a partial reformation of the ruin; in this way, they managed to make it viable and hospitable for the artists and guests who were there. In this way, the artistic interventions, sometime subjected to decay and sometime resisting to it, response to the different tenses of its impingement. Thus, they are sometime prompt by the past and, in other instances, they stand and they attack from an undeviating present. But what about the future, which will continue to promise the inhibition of decay, the escape from it? An inextricable part of this endeavour is the creation of an idiomorphic archive. The creation of this kind of archives is a very common feature of many relative artistic designs during the last years. This archive intents to note down whatever it is related to the sanatorium’s condition after its abandonment, besides what it is connected to the relative activity of Georgios Karamanis, founder of the sanatorium. This enterprise includes the following: the story of the building as a ruin, its previous usage, and every following modification or intervention in the sanatorium complex, artistic or not. In other words, it is an archive that notes down - and will contnue to do so - the decay itself, on the basis of a particular - though characteristic - example, which it is capable to constitute a conceptional counterbalance of a creative act of a symbolic rectification, such as the re-writing of data, signs, and of every kind of interference and of artistic works within it.
